Latino Review is reporting that the main bad guy will be not other than Darth Sidious!  But not in the way your expecting.  Unlike prior rumors which suggested that Ian McDiarmid would be returning to the part, LR is reporting that the part will be played by a new actor.

This seems to be an interesting rumor, however I have a hard time believing it.  I strongly doubt that the Emperor will be returning in anything beyond a cameo as a holocron (played by McDiarmid).  I also think it would be weird to have Palpatine change his face in the films.  If this were to turn out to be true and Palpatine does change his face, it would take some serious explaining to make it convincing.   Plus it would take an incredible actor to follow in McDiarmid's shoes as McDiarmid was a highlight of every Star Wars film he was in.  But if anyone can pull it off, it's JJ Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan, and Kathleen Kennedy.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

If JJ tries to pull an "alternate timeline" with SW, I'm gonna be seriously PO'd!

Maybe battling a clone of the Emperor? The existance of cloning has already been established in the movies, and it's been strongly hinted that he was trying to achieve immortality. If this rumor is true, I'd bet this is the path they take.

I would surprised for Ian McDiarmid not to return unless the story demanded it, such as a clone. But I'm pretty sure LucasFilm said the sequels wouldn't be based on any EU stories. The only other possibility that comes to mind is that the spirit of Sidious is possessing someone.

Also don't count out Sidious appearing as more than a holocron - there are dreams/nightmares, force visions, illusions, flashbacks or my own theory that the villains are trying to bring him back ala Sauron.

That's in line with EU actually.

Sidious may have mastered the power to cheat death, as his master, Darth Plagueis, did. The fact that he never passed this knowledge on to Vader is understandable, as Palpatine saw Vader's weaknesses, and also because of his own thirst for power, which he likely only tempted Anakin with, with no intention of ever sharing. Just a thought.

Are you guys stupid...Darth Sidious Survived after Darth Vader threw him in that hole in RoTJ...he survived by releaseing his astral form and then possessing one of teh clones he made of himself......read DARK EMPIRE Noobs

Lucasfilm said that they will eventually use EU material, but not in the way we expect.

How come none of you realise that darth sidious takes over a clones body and also anakin solo's body also?

One of the continuing threads from Jedi, and which appeared in Dark Empire and other stories was that there was a secret cloning facility that, when Palpatine died, his force essence immediately transferred into a new clone. However, each clone had a limited lifespan.

I can very well imagine Benedict Cumberbatch as a young clone of Darth Sidious

Yeah but it needs to be canon for that and the "Dark empire" is not. So think before calling everyone stupid next time. This is also why everyone ignored your I am madly in love with Jar Jar Binks... dont tell anyone but I have an engagement ring in my dressery comment. Don't take personal I'm only making a point :)

in the comics after the events of EP6 sidious's force transported to a non living clone body sooo this was expected

If anyone's "spirit" is transferred into a clone or possesses another character I will I am madly in love with Jar Jar Binks... dont tell anyone but I have an engagement ring in my dresser into my own hand and fling that dung directly at the screen in protest

Settle down, nerd boys. Benedict Cumberbatch is most likely playing a clone of the Emperor. Just suck it already. It can't be worse than Episode 1, so from that perspective Ep7 is a guaranteed win!

Clone.... I'd buy it if done right.

Clone would be nice. But I think it should be a young clone (why would Palpatine transfer his mind into another old body?) and it would be a real badass villain (un-li-mi-ted POWER!!!!), especially if played by BC.

Dark horse did just that with their first three series, Dark Empire I and II, and Empires end. Cloning has also been well documented in the thrawn trilogy and hand of thrawn duology

Darth Sidious didn't die in Return of the Jedi he had actually cloned himself like the clone troopers so if he was to die in one body his spirit could go into another

Ian McDiarminddd was not the highlight in any of the prequels. He played a cartoony, way over the top version of the emperor... bad directing maybe... just all around terrible movies.

Gary Oldman would be my second option after Cumberbatch, although he is a bit older now, still he is younger than McDiarmid
