It's been all but confirmed that Rian Johnson will be directing Star Wars Episode VIII, but the last (and most important) group that has yet to confirm is Lucasfilm! But they might just have. Gareth Edwards, director of the 2016 stand alone Star Wars film (and 2014's Godzilla) accepted the ALS Ice Bucket challenge (check out some of the best Star Wars themed Ice Bucket Challenges here). Edwards throughout the challenge to, as he put it, his fellow Star Wars filmmakers Josh Trank, Simon Kinberg, and Rian Johnson!
Edwards video was posted to the official Star Wars YouTube Channel, and the video description reiterates the fact that Edward's is challenging "his fellow Star Wars filmmakers, Josh Trank, Simon Kinberg and Rian Johnson." This seems to be the first official word from Lucasfilm that Johnson is working on Star Wars, though no where is it stated that he's working on Episode VIII. We know that Lucasfilm follows the rumors on the web, so perhaps they are willing to admit that, yes, Johnson is working on Star Wars, however they don't want to take attention away from JJ Abrams and the work that's being done on Episode VII.
