Today, StarWars.com delivered the final blow to Expanded Universe hopefuls:
In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe.
Only the six Star Wars films and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars content are canon. StarWars.com notes that "these stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align." Fans once thought the same to be true about the Expanded Universe novels, believing that the books were the only way to stay connected with the futures of fan favorites like Luke Skywalker, Han, and Leia.
The announcement adds that even though the Star Wars universe fans were familiar with is changing, that the Expanded Universe content is not being discarded. Fans will be pleased to know that "elements of the EU are included in Star Wars Rebels." Rebels pulled story elements from material published in the 1980's to recreate the The Inquisitor, the Imperial Securuty Bureau, and Sienar Fleet Systems in the new series set to premiere this fall.
"The EU is born out of a love for Star Wars…that's what it really is," says Dave Filoni in a video interview on the latest news. "Carrying on the legacy before it could really do so on it's own like it will do now through Episodes VII, VIII and IX." He continues, adding that there is a bright future for Star Wars.
Good news for fans: past Expanded Universe novels will continue to be kept in print, and will be presented under a new "Legends" banner, almost like an alternate universe for our beloved characters. The EU will never truly be put to rest, and will live on in the hearts of all who cherished the countless editions of Star Wars history and lore.

Now, fans face the unknown.
Fans will not have any expectations for Episode VII, no favorite EU characters to cling to and scrutinize if they're not portrayed "like the books." Perhaps this judgement was the reason that the Expanded Universe is being set aside. Now that the Expanded Universe is no longer canon, the path has been paved anew for the future of Star Wars, and fans can only wait for December 18th, 2015, to see the next chapter of the Saga.
