In light of the huge news regarding the future of the Expanded Universe (EU), Lucasfilm has also announced the first novel to be released in this new age of Star Wars EU. The novel will be a tie-in to the upcoming Star Wars Rebels animated series (debuting this fall), and is written by EU veteran John Jackson Miller (Kenobi, Knights of the Old Republic). The novel is (fittingly) titled A New Dawn, and is slated for a September release. A New Dawn is a prequel to events of Rebels and Rebels executive producers Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and Greg Weisman consulted on the novel (Filoni also wrote the foreword).
I must say this is the most excited I have been for a Star Wars novel since 2011's Darth Plagueis! I love the new direction of the EU and the story group (and that the news films won't be based on the EU, phew!) and this seems like a great starting place. Miller is a fantastic author, his last Star Wars novel, Kenobi, was one of the greatest EU stories of all time. I look forward to seeing what he does with A New Dawn.
(Also, does this mean we can finally debunk the rumor that the title for Episode VII is "A New Dawn"?)
