We all know that Star Wars is forever, but how long does Disney expect it to be useful to them. Approximately 40 years, according to Fiscal Year 2013 the Fiscal Year 2013 Annual Financial Report And Shareholder Letter. The report was sent out yesterday and caused some excitement when it revealed that the Star Wars Rebels premiere would be happening in the summer, rather than the fall as previously expected. Hidden away in the report was this little gem about Disney's long term plans for the galaxy far, far away,
"Intangible assets primarily consist of intellectual property based on the Star Wars franchise with an estimated useful life of approximately 40 years. The goodwill reflects the value to Disney from leveraging Lucasfilm intellectual property across our distribution channels, taking advantage of Disney's established global reach."
While initially that may seem as a shock since we want Star Wars to go on forever but think about where you'll be 40 years from now. That's a long way away and gives lots of opportunity for content. And that's just the expectation, who knows where Star Wars will be in 40 years and what we can expect from it.
