Rayne Roberts, creative executive for Star Wars Rebels says that Ezra, a fourteen year old pickpocket from the planet Lothal, knows "knows how to turn on the charm to get what he wants." Ezra is voiced by Taylor Gray, an actor known for his work on Nickelodeon and is the second main character announced this week.
"With Ezra we see how a kid is reacting to this Imperial rule," says Dave Filoni. He is growing up in a time where the Imperials are keeping the people imprisoned under their thumb. Filoni adds that Ezra is avoiding Stormtroopers and fighting the Empire, and steals from them whenever possible: "He's always stealing their helmets -- what kid would't?"
Greg Weisman, the executive producer of Rebels, notes that fans are going to be watching the show through Ezra's eyes and learning about how the galaxy has evolved through this character's experiences.
Ezra understand that he can do things that are "a little strange", although he doesn't understand that he has Force abilities. Filoni calls them "instinctive and reactionary."
Kanan and Ezra meet up in the series, and Kanan becomes like a mentor to the young Force-user. "Ezra will never become a Jedi without Kanan, and Kanan will never reclaim his status and become a Jedi Knight without Ezra," says Dave Filoni. "They need each other."
