This morning, a great website called io9, which covers many things geek, gave us our first look at a new, a most likely exciting, comic series simply titled Star Wars.

Although more will be revealed about the series at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con, here’s what we’ve gathered from our friends at io9:
  • It is written by “prolific” author Brian Wood, who has previously worked with Marvel and created many original comic series as well.
  • It is illustrated Carlos D’Anda, who designed characters for Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City.
  • It will be an ongoing series, and it will take place during the Original Trilogy (hooray!).
  • The series first cover has been illustrated by none other than epic illustrator Alex Ross, a renowned artist in the Superhero realm of comics (see header image).
Dark Horse editor Randy Stradley said that the editorial team at Dark Horse and Lucas Books felt that it was time to go back to the main characters of the first three films. It took them a year to make a plan to reintroduce them into the comics. In reference as to how different this new series is, Stradley states that “I guess the answer would be that we're trying very had to keep everything fresh — as if Episode IV had just come out in theaters. This is the Star Wars series for everyone who has loved the films, but has never delved into any of the comics or novels,” which makes it perfect for just about any Star Wars fan out there, from the “Yeah, I like Star Wars” fans to the “Dude, I love Star Wars!” .
We’ll get to explore the characters feeling and relationships. These emotions, from characters such as Luke Skywalker, will fuel the storyline. As for the storylines themselves, Stradley drops few hints: “Vader gets a special assignment, the Rebels suspect a traitor in their ranks, and one more thing... stealth squadron.”
The series will debut in January of 2013.
