The best frickin' pilot in the galaxy is getting his own comic series. Marvel announced today (
via USA Today) that a Poe Dameron mini series would begin hitting comic book store shelves in April of this year. The series will be written by Charles Soule (who has also written the
Lando and
Obi-Wan & Anakin series for Marvel) with art by Phil Noto (who's previously illustrated several
Star Wars young readers novels including the recent
Before the Awakening).
"the new comic debuting in April focuses on the lead-up to the opening scene of The Force Awakens, which saw Poe seeking out mysterious traveler Lor San Tekka (Max von Sydow) on the planet Jakku for a key to finding the missing Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill)."
About the challenges of writing a Poe Dameron series, Soule said,
"It’s not as instinctive in some ways as writing a story about, say, Lando Calrissian
was for me – I’ve been thinking about Lando Calrissian for 30 years,
whereas Poe Dameron I’ve been thinking about for six months.”
On dealing with Poe's backstory, Soule added,
“It’s silly not to explore the idea of a guy who grew up steeped in the Rebellion and the older Republic and all of those myths and legends. If you think about it, he grew up the way we did, hearing all of these stories.”
Noto told
USA Today that, to prepare for the series, he's been going through Oscar Isaac's filmography, saying,
“Seeing so much of him on screen, it’s easier in a way to act that part
out in my head while I’m drawing: How would Oscar Isaac act in this
situation as Poe Dameron?”
