Report: The Next 'Star Wars' Trilogy Has Been Pushed Back To 2023

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are continuing to linger in the United States, which means things won't be going back to normal anytime soon. Pretty much every industry on the planet has been affected by the pandemic, perhaps none more significantly than the film industry. Many films, which have been ready to release for months, have been repeatedly delayed, and countless others haven't been able to go into production. As one of the biggest studios on the planet, Disney has had to completely restructure their release schedule, and today they officially announced some major scheduling changes for some of their biggest properties, which includes the greatest one of all: Star Wars.

On top of announcing that such films as the upcoming Avatar sequels had been delayed, and that Mulan has been completely removed from their release schedule, Disney, via CNBC, has revealed that the next set of Star Wars films, which included a new trilogy that was set to begin releasing in 2022, has been officially pushed back a year. Back in 2018 it was announced that Game Of Thrones showrunners David Benioff & D.B. Weiss would be writing and producing three new Star Wars films that would hit theaters in 2022, 2024 and 2026, respectively. Since then Benioff & Weiss have left the project and the fate of this trilogy has been seemingly up in the air, until now. This announcement confirms that these films are still in development, but each will be released one year later than originally intended. The changes to the schedule are as follows:

  • Untitled Star Wars #1
Original release date: December 16, 2022

New release date: December 22, 2023

  • Untitled Star Wars #2
Original release date: December 20, 2024

New release date: December 19, 2025

  • Untitled Star Wars #3
Original release date: December 18, 2026

New release date: December 17, 2027

In addition to these films we are still anticipating the release of a Star Wars film being developed by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, another Star Wars film directed and co-written by Taika Waititi, and an additional Star Wars trilogy being developed by The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson. Information regarding all the aforementioned Star Wars productions are limited at best right now, but hopefully we will begin learning more about them soon. As a wise Jedi once said, "Patience!"

The overlap between Star Wars and Game of Thrones are many, and only growing in numbers (sort of like the soldiers in the Night King's army, amirite?), with directors and cast members having been involved in both.  This continued on the set of the final season of Thrones, when Star Wars creator George Lucas visited the set.  Lucas' visit was featured in a behind the scenes video released by HBO, where he can been seen on set and offering some "direction" to Jon Snow actor Kit Harrington.
