Neal Scanlan Discusses Creating Aliens for 'The Force Awakens'

By: Dominic Jones

Every Star Wars movie introduces a range of new aliens to the galaxy, and The Force Awakens was no exception.  The task of creating these new aliens for the new fell to Neal Scanlan, who headed up the creature shop on The Force Awakens.  Scanlan spoke recently about his experience working on Star Wars with USA Today.

Scanlan said, "There were certain aliens that we made then, even during the shooting process, clearly transcended from being just a background alien to having an authority or likability."  He added, "Should the human race of Star Wars die tomorrow, any one of these characters could take the mantle and become the next species that dominated the universe."

Scanlan also discussed the process for updating the looks of returning favorites like Admiral Ackbar and Nien Numb, saying the design was tweaked slightly "just to make them the way we remembered them as children. For today’s audience one has to do a little cosmetics on it but make sure we didn’t lose the spirit or the personality."

'The Force Awakens' VFX Crew Discuss the BB-8 "Thumbs Up" Moment

By: Dominic Jones

One sequence that never fails to get a reaction out of the audience in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the moment when BB-8 decides to help Finn out and tell Rey the location of the Resistance base.  After Finn shoots BB-8 a thumbs up as thanks, BB-8 returns the gesture using a lighter to simulate a thumb.  Turns out, this sequence was never in the script and had to be figured out after the scene was shot.

“It was probably something that J.J. either came up with on the day, or certainly came up with later,” Neal Scanlan, the head of The Force Awakens creature shop, told MTV News.

Visual Effects supervisor Roger Guyett described how they mixed practical and digital effects to create the the "thumbs up" moment, saying, “I think it’s a real BB-8 and then we inserted a CG panel and its arm that came out. So all of his tools, if you like, when he fires his wires and he does that stuff, that’s sort of digital CG.”

There was another concern that the team had to overcome when creating the effect,  ILM's Patrick Tubach explains.  “One of the difficult things with animating something like that is you have to be very careful that it doesn’t look like he’s giving you some other sort of gesture! We moved all the pieces around to make sure it was very clearly a thumbs up over any other kind of ’salute.'”

I think it's safe to say they succeeded in creating a memorable, if not iconic, moment for the new film.

'The Force Awakens' Creature Shop Head Tells People: BB-8 "Can't Be Trusted"

By: Dominic Jones

The new droid BB-8 is already fan favorite and The Force Awakens isn't even out yet!  People Magazine just released a new feature on BB-8 from their special Star Wars issue hitting shelves on December 3rd, in which Neal Scanlan, the head of The Force Awakens creature, may have a little warning for fans.

Via People,
Don't think BB-8, the new droid from Star Wars: The Force Awakens is simply a cute little metallic orange ball with a beeping head: This little fellow is actually full of surprises.

"We always saw BB-8 as a naughty puppy or a very clever little child," says Neal Scanlan, chief of creature and droid effects, in PEOPLE's new Star Wars special issue. "They know how to be coy, how to be cute, how to sulk, how to pull at heartstrings to get what they want."

The droid is essentially a next-generation upgrade of R2-D2, the venerable robot sidekick who has appeared in all seven Star Wars films. "[Director] J.J. Abrams drew the original design for BB-8 on a little napkin," Scanlan says. "The idea of using a droid that can roll and navigate things using a wheel or a ball is very current. Poor R2 is becoming a dinosaur."

Like R2, though, the real BB-8 is a (somewhat) working robot, not a CGI character. Scanlan's team infused BB-8 with a distinct personality on set that the other actors could play off of. Main puppeteer Brian Herring, wearing a blue suit so he could be digitally removed, would perform the gestures and even the initial sounds.

"Those aren't the sounds you'll hear in the movie," says Scanlan, whose team used that approach for all their characters, including the creature menagerie in the castle of Maz Kanata. "But the people that performed the puppets would vocalize to mirror the performance, which means you start to engage with them as characters. After a while, people don't talk to the performer anymore, they talk to the puppet."

That on-set interaction helped give BB-8 a well-rounded personality, including some secrets beyond just what all those orange panels are hiding. Scanlan has cryptically warned that BB-8, who is already a favorite breakout character, "shouldn't be trusted."

Of the droid's mysteries, Scanlan did reveal to PEOPLE, "BB-8 knew what he was up to, or she knew what she was up to because we're not quite sure if it was a boy or a girl. She or he is using all those little tricks to be able to get around Rey [the central character, played by Daisy Ridley] and be able to transport himself on this incredibly important journey. He's on a mission, and he has to succeed in this mission. He has a strong ability to be able to manipulate people – in the nicest possible sense of the word."

Could BB-8 be an agent of The First Order?  It seems unlikely, but Scanlan is definitely suggesting there is more than meets the eye when it comes to this droid.  We'll find out in less than two weeks!

Scanlan's comments do remind of this comic by artist  Matt Rhodes,
Could it be?
