Very interesting discussion regarding Palpatine’s return. If we believe all of the reports that this was always on the cards, and factoring in that this may have been in George’s sequel treatment, I am fine with it, as long as there is a good plausible explanation for his return. Having said that, one of my concerns when they announced JJ Abrams in the sequel trilogy was his over reliance on nostalgia and legacy characters. This highlights one of the issues that has plagued for many years the current franchise, characterised by the long spells between film trilogies and the lack of film content in between for the casual fans(excluding The Clone Wars series in this analysis). In effect Star Wars has become a victim of its own success because those dry spells of content and EU material in between has allowed SW fans to vicariously highjack the franchise from the creative heads at Lucasfilm and therefore stifled its progression. A lot of comparatives have been made with Marvels success, however unlike SW, that franchise solely relies on a source material that has been serialised in the comic medium since it’s inception by Stan Lee, and it relies on a plethora of characters that have transcended pop culture throughout many decades. Star Wars on the other hand is at a disadvantage on that respect because for 40 plus years it has solely relied on the legacy characters for its continuous success, and I now include in this bracket Anakin’s demise, since now avid fans of the prequels are vociferously being heard. If Star Wars is to survive and turn the page on excessive nostalgia, it must learn the lessons from other franchises such as Star Trek, where by successive films were over relying on legacy characters from the original series and the next generation series.
As George said it, SW is about family relationships, apart from the force aspect that sets it apart from other franchises, and it does not have to be restrained to the Skywalkers. Furthermore, other allegorical worlds can be represented in the big screen without over nostalgic connotations, case in point being the prequels or The Clone Wars derivative.
