After a significant dry spell of Star Wars news lately it looks like we finally have something exciting to talk about! Today The Star Wars Show unveiled a brand new Stormtrooper that will be making its first appearance in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker later this year.

Hosts Andi Gutierrez and Anthony Carboni officially revealed the "Sith Trooper", a red-clad Trooper with armor that is similar, but also very different from the standard First Order Strormtroopers. They shared few details about the Sith Trooper, other than stating that it is "the next evolution of the Imperial First Order soldiers, and bares a more modern and menacing look worthy of its namesake." I think the name alone is enough to get fans eagerly speculating, but we'll get to that in a minute.

StarWars.com also shared details about a special Stormtrooper exhibit at San Diego Comic Con that's taking place July 18th - 21st. The exhibit seeks to celebrate the entire Star Wars saga, and in turn the progression of the Stormtrooper, arguably one of the most iconic designs in film history. A collection of screen used Stormtrooper costumes will be on display at the exhibit, including the classic Imperial Stormtrooper, TIE Pilot, Death Trooper, Shoretrooper, Biker Scout, First Order Stormtrooper and TIE Pilot, as well as the newly revealed Sith Trooper.

Speaking of the Sith Trooper, Lucasfilm also revealed an assortment of new merchandise based on the Sith Trooper that will be available exclusively at San Diego Comic Con. They include everything from a 1/6 scale Hot Toys figure, a special edition Hasbro The Black Series and a Funko Pop! figure, to a T-shirt, hat, pin and bookmark. You can see a few of them below, and the complete list over on StarWars.com:

The biggest takeaway from this announcement is obviously the name "Sith Trooper". Sith is a name that has been sparsely used in the Sequel era, based on the assumption that the Sith have been long dead at the time of these films. But now that we know Emperor Palpatine will be returning in The Rise Of Skywalker, in one form or another, it definitely adds much more intrigue. What will be the purpose of the Sith Troopers? Will they be serving for Palpatine? What does this all mean for fate of the Sith? Unfortunately we've still got several months to go before any of those questions can be answered.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th!
