Later this year we'll the debut of the first ever live action Star Wars TV series, The Mandalorian, premiering this Fall on Disney+. Writer and executive producer Jon Favreau recently shared another behind the scenes picture from the making of the series on his Instagram account. The new picture shows Taika Waititi, who will be directing one of the episodes in the first season, in the voice over booth recording lines for the series. Waititi, who's an actor as well as a director, appears to be voicing an IG droid in the series. Check out the picture below,
Favreau had previous shared an image of an IG droid (possibly IG-88 from The Empire Strikes Back) on his Instagram. This new post appears to confirm that droid will be more than just an Easter egg hidden away in the background of a shot. We've also previously seen IG droids in action in The Clone Wars animated series, so it will be cool if they can bring that type action to The Mandalorian.
Fans will get their first real look at The Mandalorian on Sunday April 14th when Favreau and his fellow executive producer (and episodic director) Dave Filoni will host a panel about the series at Star Wars Celebration Chicago, Lucasfilm's official fan convention. More details about that can be found here.
Production began on The Mandalorian back in October, with shooting taking place in southern California, and wrapped in February. The series is set following the events of Return of the Jedi
and follows the adventures of a "lone gunfighter", played by Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal, as he navigates the
galaxy in the post-Empire/early days of the New Republic. The series also stars Gina Carano (Deadpool), Nick Nolte (Affliction), Carl Weathers (Predator), Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), and Omid Abtahi (American Gods).
The first season, which will be available when Disney+ launches in the
Fall, is expected to consist of eight episodes. The episodes are written
by executive producer Jon Favreau and directed by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow (Better Call Saul), and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope). The series is executive produced by Favreau and Filoni, as well as Colin Wilson and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
