Rumor: Early Plot Details About 'Episode IX'

We're still over ten months away from the release of Star Wars Episode IX in theaters and, as expected, the largely remains under wraps.  However, for fans that just can't wait to know more about the plot of the final installment of the sequel trilogy, MakingStarWars.net has some early story details about what we can expect from the film. As always, there is a chance this may not be true (though given MSW's track record that seems unlikely) but if you are trying to avoid all Episode IX spoilers then stop reading now.  This is your official SPOILER ALERT!

MSW reports that Episode IX will involve both the heroes of the Resistance and the villains of the First Order in race to find a MacGuffin (a story telling device, usually an object, that drives the plot, like the Death Star plans in A New Hope or the map to Luke Skywalker in The Force Awakens).  What it specifically is is unknown at this point, but whatever it is both side see it as crucial.

The search will lead the main characters to split up, though not for long.  According to MSW,

"At one point in the story, our heroes are all reunited in this quest. My guess is that structurally Fin and Poe Dameron follow their threads and end up on that classic sand planet (lots more on that later) and then Rey too ends up at the same location. The heroes celebrate being reunited at a festival of sorts in a happy moment, a quiet before the storm of the ending."

Ever since photos of Episode IX being filmed in Jordan surfaced, there has been speculation about what planet it's meant to be, somewhere we've been before like Tatooine, Jakku, or Jedha?  Or some place new?  Based on MSW's report it seems unlikely that it's somewhere new and the use of classic might lead us to suggest Tatooine (though it would not shock me if director JJ Abrams wanted to bring things back to Jakku, where the story of the sequel trilogy began).

A reunion of all the major players of the sequel trilogy on a desert planet does fit in nicely with all the reports of which actors were on set out there (Star Wars News Net has nice run down on people connected with the film who was in Jordan this past fall).  In addition to the hero actors (Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, etc), our primary villain actor Adam Driver was also reportedly on set in Jordan.  Makes you wonder what could draw Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo all to the same spot (if they even are, recall that Driver was on set in Ireland for the Force connections scenes in The Last Jedi, even though Kylo never set foot on Ahch-To).

Speaking of Kylo, MSW also has some very interesting tidbits about what might be driving him in this new film.  According to another MSW report,

"Sometime ago, I spoke to a source about Star Wars: Episode IX who told me that things would get interesting for Kylo Ren when a threat from The Beyond reveals itself, making Kylo Ren vulnerable. This threat would serve as a motivating factor for Kylo and Rey’s interactions as the story progressed but the source wasn’t sure which act it happened in or how it unfolded."

Another source reportedly told MSW that Episode IX would see the highly vaunted Knights of Ren return from somewhere known as "The Beyond".
Obviously this all leaves us with more questions that it does answers.  Are the Knights of Ren the aforementioned MacGuffin?  Or are they an unrelated threat?  And how does all this fit together with the larger story of the war between the Resistance and The First Order?  And how will Rey and Kylo's experiences together in The Last Jedi inform their decisions about how to deal with one another and these potential threats in Episode IX?

Only 317 days to go....

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
