The Kazuda Kast | "The Recruit"

On the debut episode of The Kazuda Kast, The Star Wars Underworld's Star Wars Resistance discussion, Dominic, Ciaran, and Ben break down the Resistance series premiere, "The Recruit". They share their thoughts on the main character Kazuda Xiono, his introduction and where he story might go. They analyze the situation in the galaxy between the Resistance, the New Republic, and The First Order, and how that may impact Kaz's story. In terms of kids shows these days, yeah PTSD, family separation and problems, and so on are common place. Steve Universe is full of progressive and sometimes very mature themes: several leads are LGBTQ characters, they deal with body shaming, identity issues, and all that stuff. Even something more comedic like Gravity Falls deals with super super complex plotlines, and very complicated family stuff and sibling rivalry. Not in a jokey way but like actually fantastically dealing with resentment and guilt over burning bridges.

Many recent animated show seriously deal with guilt or grief in a way that puts many legitimately good live action shows to shame. Also I think superhero animated shows have been showing how mature kids animation can be. From BTAS being very moody and having some real heartbreaking episodes, to STAS having some very mature social themes like police brutality (albeit very minimally) and ending an ep with a guy dying in a gas chamber seriously what the heck, then the 2000s went even father in terms of themes what with spectacular spider-man being very amazing with how it deals with character dynamics as well as touching upon (albeit in a more sci-fi way) Harry's drug addiction, Justice League did stuff with government and accountability

Maybe the best example is the episode of Aurther that is legit a wonderful story meant to be a response to the terror after 9/11. seriously watch that episode it is superb. Other shows like Hey Arnold also have great stories that introduce kids to important themes, Pigeon man deals with depression and another ep deals with therapy and home issues and illusions to parental drinking problems. Courage did an episode that was essentially about a lesbian couple in which one of the partners keeps going back to an abusive man and hiding from getting help. Seriously cartoons for kids can be powerful and have gone beyond "stealing is wrong" decades ago.

Honestly this is why I think mocking people who complained that early TCW and parts of rebels where "too kiddy" is unfair. Now yes for sure there is a lot of edgelord stuff behind some of that. However there is also a large number of animation fans who brought up those same points. It is simplistic to think that it is just that people want something dark or don't want it to be a kids show, it is that at point TCW and Rebels (really at their starts) where holding hands or when they did violence it felt like tonal whiplash and consequences where not dealt with the way they maybe should have been.

There are certainly a lot of people who complained cause those shows did not meet their gory standards, but I think there is also a solid argument that at times they can be too "kiddy" for kids shows. Like Brother's of the broken horn is flat out insulting to one's intelligence. This is why as TCW began to have real consequences and darker moments had more to do with dealing with the darkness than just lots of dark things happening; people began to love the show. The squadron dying in the malevolence arc has little weight beyond a token moment at the end, but Umbara hits you hard. In the same way that captain planet may talk down to kids, but Charmander the stray Pokemon manages to do an amazing job introducing kids to abusive relationships in a very sadly frank way.

That was my issue with early rebels, there was no weight to the threat until sudden beheading. Whereas I think Resistance, with its dark humor, manages to make the threat of death feel present at all times, without being grim or excessive about it.

I go more in depth on that point in my review on Channel 1138 so I will say check that out for my full thoughts, and cause I am willing to bed Chris will appreciate more site traffic :-)
