It appears the big Star Wars: Episode IX rumor that's been floating around recently is now even closer to becoming a reality. Just mere weeks ago our friends at Fantha Tracks reported that a major legacy character was set to appear in the final part of the Sequel Trilogy. Now that report has been corroborated by another trusted source.
Earlier tonight, Borys Kit from The Hollywood Reporter dropped the scoop that none other than Billy Dee Williams will be returning to portray Lando Calrissian in Episode IX, which is due in theaters late next year. Kit sights inside sources for the information and points to a recent convention appearance that Williams canceled as further proof of the news.
As always, we must caution that nothing is officially confirmed until we hear it straight from Lucasfilm. Nevertheless, given THR's track record, I'd say the possibility of this news being true is very strong, and I couldn't be more excited.
Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill did remarkable jobs bringing their characters back to the big screen in Episodes VII and VIII, and I always found it disappointing that we have yet to have even a mention of Lando in this Trilogy. With all recent the buzz Donald Glover created for the character in Solo: A Star Wars Story, I think now is the perfect time revisit the character. And I have faith that Billy Dee will turn in another wonderful performance as the "old smoothie" we all love.
Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to going into production any day now, and will hit theaters on December 20th, 2019.
