Even before Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit theaters last December it was announced that the film's writer & director Rian Johnson would be continuing to work within the franchise on his own standalone Star Wars trilogy. Joining him will be Johnson's longtime partner, producer Ram Bergman, who also worked on The Last Jedi. Bergman, who is a native of Israel, was recently interviewed by the Israeli website From The Grapevine and spoke about his career so far, his history with Star Wars, and briefly touched on his and Johnson's upcoming trilogy.
First off, Bergman further confirmed that the trilogy will deal with brand new elements in Star Wars:
He also says that the release of the first film in the trilogy could still be a few years away:
Bergman was also asked if he was consider filming a Star Wars film in his home country of Israel, to which he responded:
"It’s a completely new trilogy that writer-director Rian Johnson, my partner, is going to create. It’s all new characters. Everything is new."
He also says that the release of the first film in the trilogy could still be a few years away:
"I can’t tell you because we don’t know yet. Maybe in two years; it’s just in the early stages."
Bergman was also asked if he was consider filming a Star Wars film in his home country of Israel, to which he responded:
"Who knows? It’s a function of what the location calls for. But I would be the happiest guy. I did “A Tale of Love and Darkness” there a few years ago. I would love to work with more Israelis and work in Israel. I was just there two weeks ago. I went twice in the last two months. My mom is there, my family and friends."
We know pretty much nothing about this new standalone trilogy(hence why we have to keep referring to it as the "Rian Johnson Trilogy"), but it's still very exciting. Simply knowing that Ram Bergman and Rian Johnson are creating these films is reason enough to be thrilled. I think they've more than proven to they have a great affection for the franchise and have the ability to make something truly great.
