Last month, Lucasfilm gave fans an early Christmas present when they announced that The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson would be returning to Star Wars after his film's release this December to create and all-new stand alone trilogy of films that are separate from the Skywalker saga. Johnson is currently slated to write and direct (at least) the first film in the trilogy, but beyond that little is known about it. Obviously, there are lots of questions. Fortunately, Collider was able to sit down with Johnson during the recent The Last Jedi press event in LA and they asked him about how this trilogy came to be, if he was ever considered as director for Episode IX, and if he plans on directing all three of the films in his new trilogy.
