Mark Hamill and Rian Johnson Discuss the Connection Between Luke and Leia

One of the big questions heading into Star Wars: The Last Jedi is will Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa reunite one last time on the big screen.  After Carrie Fisher tragically passed away late last year, Lucasfilm confirmed that Leia would be written out of the story meaning that this is the last chance for Luke and Leia to share the big screen one more time.  This potential reunion was the topic of the latest piece from Entertainment Weekly, which features interviews with Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill and The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson.  The piece was released as part of EW's online coverage of The Last Jedi, which coincides with a cover story about the film in this week's issue.

While nobody would confirm whether or not the long lost twins will reunite in the film, Hamill did reflect on Luke and Leia's relationship in the Original Trilogy and how they had become family even before their biological connection was revealed.  Hamill said,

"It was only at the end of Jedi that they became of aware of this bond. The real bond is that they’re Luke and Leia. They’ve gone through this adventure together. They’ve been through some rough stuff together."

The big question, as it relates to the sequel trilogy, Hamill elaborates, telling EW,

"Luke longs to have that extended family that he established in the original trilogies, but now he’s at a place in his life and in his history where he’s shunned all of that. The big question is why didn’t he respond to Leia during [The Force Awakens]? There’s a lot of things you can’t answer until you see this movie."

As for if we'll see the reunion, Johnson wouldn't say but he did comment on the fact that Luke and Leia appear together on one of this week's variant covers of Entertainment Weekly, saying,

"It’s nice seeing them on the cover though. Even if all we have is that."

I hope Johnson is just playing coy, and that Luke and Leia do reunite in The Last Jedi.  However, if they do not and Lucasfilm is using fans emotions about what happened last December to get them hyped about the movie, only to disappoint them then they are doing a massive disservice.  In fact, the EW cover with the text at the top saying "Will Luke and Leia reunite?" will seem very inappropriate, at best.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th.  The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley as Rey, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as DJ, and Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata.
