Denis Villeneuve Is Interested In Directing A Star Wars Standalone Film

Star Wars film directors have been a massive topic of conversation this year, and unfortunately it seems more have been fired than hired so far. That still doesn't change the fact that we have an endless amount of Star Wars movies to look forward to, and long list of possible directors to helm them. Now one more director has added his name to that list.

Denis Villeneuve, who directed a string of  recent eye catching films, including SicarioArrival, and Blade Runner 2049, made an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast and spoke briefly about the Star Wars saga. According to Screenrant, host Josh Horowitz had some interesting back and forth with Villeneuve about the possibility of the director taking on a Star Wars film in the future. Villeneuve spoke of his admiration for A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, and was keen on the idea of the new standalone trilogy headed by Rian Johnson. About the idea of directing a Star Wars film of his own, Villeneuve commented:

"It’s something that, again it’s like, I would be intrigued. I don’t know, it’s very difficult. What is dangerous with Star Wars right now is it’s become its own vocabulary. I would love to see them, I think Rogue One was a very interesting attempt to get out of the mold... I think it would be a great idea to get out of there and to go on a new part of the galaxy, that I would be open to."

The prospect of doing films set outside the classic Skywalker saga seems like a more enticing idea to many directors, especially someone like Denis Villeneuve. And you can't blame them, considering the obvious restrictions of taking on an episodic film, as opposed to the completely free creativity allowed in a standalone. I am definitely in full support of seeing Denis Villeneuve, and other directors like him, being given the chance to have their stories play out in a galaxy far, far away.
