Paul Bettany Joins The Cast Of The Han Solo Film

It seems it's never too late for casting news to drop from an upcoming Star Wars film! While the Han Solo standalone film has been in production for many months, it seems a recent casting shakeup has led to a major development for the film.

Director Ron Howard tweeted a new photo from the set today seemingly confirming that none-other than Paul Bettany has been cast in the Han Solo film. Bettany is best known for his role as JARVIS, and later Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as roles in A Beautiful Mind (2001) and The Da Vinci Code (2006), which were both directed by Ron Howard.

Even more interestingly, /Film reports that Bettany is replacing Michael K. Williams, who recently had to drop out of the film due to scheduling conflicts with reshoots. While Williams insinuated that his character had been cut from the film, /Film insists that the character will remain, only now played by Paul Bettany. /Film explains:

"Bettany will be playing the exact same character Williams was set to play, with the same name and motivations. However, the character will now be a human instead of a motion-capture alien."

Michael K. Williams described his character as being "half human, half beast", but now that character design will most likely go unseen. While we cannot confirm this bit of information at the moment, the timing of Bettany's casting seems to point to it being true. It certainly makes sense, and considering Bettany's talent, it will be exciting to see what he brings to this film.

Paul Bettany will star alongside Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Kura, Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Thandie Newton (Westworld), and Joonas Suotamo (The Force Awakens) as Chewbacca.  The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time). The untitled young Han Solo film hits theaters on May 25th, 2018.
