Report: Details About Colin Trevorrow's Exit From 'Episode IX'

Earlier today we learned the surprising news that director Colin Trevorrow will no longer be directing Star Wars Episode IX.  Lucasfilm made the announcement in a statement on StarWars.com, claiming that the change was the result of the two parties realizing that, "our visions for the project differ."  While there is no doubt that creative differences were the main cause of the split, there are still questions about what these differences were and how we got to this point.  Borys Kit and Mia Galuppo over at The Hollywood Reporter have reached out their inside sources to offer some insight what exactly happened.

According to Kit and Galuppo, "script issues have continued to be a sore spot throughout Episode IX’s development."  Not too long ago, Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) was brought in to rewrite the script that Trevorrow had been working on with his long time writing partner Derek Connolly (Jurrasic World).

In addition, per Kit and Galuppo,
"Sources say that the working relationship between Trevorrow and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy became unmanageable. Kennedy, who had already been through one director firing/replacement on the Han Solo spinoff movie, was not eager for a sequel and tried to avoid this decision."

This news does come just a little over a month after the news came out that Phil Lord and Chris Miller had been removed from the upcoming untitled Han Solo film midway through filming.  The duo were replaced shortly thereafter by Ron Howard, who is still shooting the film.  Given the high profile nature of that change, it's no surprise that Kennedy tried to avoid this move.

No official word yet on who is slated to take over Episode IX, but The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson is apparently the frontrunner for the job.  As it stands now, the film is still currently slated for a May 24th, 2019 release date.
