Emmy award winning actor Michael K. Williams's role from the upcoming untitled young Han Solo film has been cut. The actor spoke with Deadline recently and revealed that his role was one of the, what we assume are many, significant changes that were made following Ron Howard taking over as director from Phil Lord and Chris Miller back in June. The reason for the change is that the massive reshoots that Howard planned to revamp the film clashed with Williams' schedule. Williams explained,
"When Ron Howard got hired to finish out the film, there were some
reshoot issues that needed to be done in regards to my character, in
order for it to match the new direction which the producers wanted Ron
to carry the film in. And that would have
required me on a plane a month ago to London, to Pinewood, to do
reshoots. But I’m here, on location in Africa [where he is shooting the spy thriller The Red Sea Diving Resort]. It’s scheduling. I’m not
going to be back on the market until the end of November after [his
SundanceTV series] Hap and Leonard, and for them to wait that
long for me, that would have pushed back the release date, which I
believe is in May 2018. They wanted me now; I couldn’t go. So they had
to clip-clip-clip."
Williams did say about the version of his character that he created with Lord and Miller, saying, "I felt great about what I created with the directors that I worked with." As for what Williams' character was, apparently it would have been some sort of humanoid character that Deadline describes as being "half human, half beast."
While it's certainly disappointing that Williams will not be appearing in the film, the actor maintains a positive attitude towards Star Wars and his experience on the film. Williams said, "I left with a very good taste in my mouth about the whole family, and I
hope that I left a good taste in their mouth. They’re a great group of
people, the Lucas family."
The untitled young Han Solo film hits theaters on May 25th, 2018 and stars
Alden Ehrenreich (Hail Caesar!) as Han Solo, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Emilia
Clarke (Game of Thrones), Woody Harrelson (True Detective) as Beckett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Thandie Newton (Westworld), and Joonas Suotamo (The Force Awakens) as Chewbacca. The film is directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), with a script by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and his son Jon Kasdan (The First Time).
