Colin Trevorrow Promises "Emotionally Resonant" End to 'Episode IX'

All three directors of the sequel trilogy of Star Wars films faced immeasurable challenges, bringing the franchise back to the mainstream audience in a way that was both reverent to what had come before, while also pushing the story in new directions and setting up the future.  While it was up to JJ Abrams to establish this new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens, and Rian Johnson to push it in new directions in the upcoming The Last Jedi, the biggest challenge facing Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow is to give it all a satisfying conclusion.

Trevorrow is well aware of the pressure, and is ready to face challenge.  Fortunately, unlike Luke going to face Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi, he doesn't have to do it alone.  Trevorrow spoke with Screen Rant recently while promoting his new film The Book of Henry, and spoke about the support team he has at Lucasfilm and promised a finale that wouldn't let fans down.

Trevorrow said,

"The process of Star Wars began way back in August of 2015 when I looked at what J.J. and Rian had done and I’m very fortunate that I’m surrounded by some really, really brilliant producers and brilliant creative minds – Kiri Hart and the Lucasfilm story group and my producer [Michelle] Rejwan and Kathy Kennedy and also J.J. and Rian, Larry Kasdan. I mean, these are the best minds available and everybody’s engaged in making sure this is the most satisfying and emotionally resonant conclusion that we can possibly deliver."

In some ways, Trevorrow faces the biggest challenge of the three directors.  Not only does he have to live up to the expectations set by his predecessors, and provide satisfying answers to the big questions of the sequel trilogy, he also has to handle the character of Leia following the passing of actress Carrie Fisher in December 2016.  Lucasfilm and Disney have confirmed that Leia's role won't be altered in The Last Jedi to reflect the real world tragedy and they won't be using GCI recreate her likeness, similar to what they did with Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One. 

Trevorrow recently addressed these, admittedly, self imposed limitations, promising, "I can guarantee it will be handled with love and respect, and all of the soul that Carrie Fisher deserves."

Star Wars Episode IX hits theaters on May 24th, 2019.
