By Ciaran Duggan,

Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be filmed in the United Kingdom on this day in 2013.

The seventh movie in the Saga film franchise was due to start production in 2014 before a cinematic release in December 2015.

The then British Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, met executives from Disney-owned Lucasfilm in London earlier in 2013 to discuss the plans.

He said: "I think it is a real vote of confidence in Britain's creative industries and a big movie like that brings with it not just jobs for actors and directors and so on, but for all the other people who have put together an enormous movie."

Mr Osborne said the multi-national corporation's decision was "clear evidence" that the UK remained an attractive prospect to large film studios.

The Chancellor spoke at a meeting of the G7 group of industrialised nations and revealed that his favorite character is Han Solo.
