John Boyega Says Finn Won't Use a Lightsaber in 'The Last Jedi'

The first hero we say any imagery of wielding a lightsaber in the promotion of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was John Boyega's stormtrooper turned good guy Finn. While Finn was seen using a lightsaber in posters, trailers, TV spots, and even a couple of times in the film, ultimately the lightsaber was meant to be used by Finn's compatriot Rey in the film's final duel with Kylo Ren.  But this has raised the questions: is Finn Force-sensitive, and will we see him using a lightsaber again?

In an interview with Vanity Fair, posted following the release of Annie Leibovitz's portraits of the cast and David Kamp's cover story for the latest issue yesterday, Boyega confirmed we would not be seeing Finn using a lightsaber in The Last Jedi.

In The Last Jedi, Boyega says, Finn’s reasonable facility with the saber is not further explicated. “But you never know,” he says. “I talk to Mark Hamill sometimes and he tells me stories about how he wasn’t told about the ‘Darth Vader is his father’ situation until he got on set. I feel like there must be something going on, something that makes me go, ‘Huh, why does he wield one, and what’s that all about?’ It’ll be interesting to see if that’s ever explored.”

So no more Finn action with a lightsaber, at least for now.  While this doesn't mean that Finn is definitely not Force-sensitive, it does at least indicate that Rian Johnson chose not to explore that potential story line.  That being said, it's always possible that another Star Wars filmmaker, perhaps Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow, may consider the possibility of making Finn a Jedi in the future.

Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15th.  The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, Benicio Del Toro, and Lupita Nyong'o.
