Sith is about to get real on Star Wars Rebels. This week's episode of the series, "Twin Suns", will see two legendary adversaries face off one more(possibly last) time. Since becoming a presence on the show in the season two finale episode "Twilight Of The Apprentice", Darth Maul has been on a mission to find the man who seemingly killed him years before; Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Now it appears Maul is finally close to accomplishing his goal in "Twin Suns" as a new clip, released by IGN today, shows the former Sith Lord on the desert world of Tatooine in search of Kenobi. You can check it out below:
Additionally, IGN spoke with Sam Witwer, who voices Maul in the series, and got his take on the character's continuing story and the return of "Ben" Kenobi(voiced by Stephen Stanton):
“That was a fun thing, because when you hear a voice that sounds like Alec Guinness say ‘My old adversary,’ it just glues the prequels and The Clone Wars and the original trilogy together in a really satisfying way. I remember when Ahsoka started showing up on Rebels and Vader started showing up on Rebels, suddenly that becomes this incredible connective tissue, this thematic connective tissue between all these different pieces of Star Wars storytelling. Myself, being a fan, I think that’s really satisfying to get those connections.”
Witwer also touches on the state of Maul's sanity in Rebels:
“I was trying to make a very specific statement. Dave [Filoni] presented me with the scripted material, and we talked about it beforehand, but when it was time to do it, Dave and I were in complete agreement and said 'We’re going back to Lotho Minor, the garbage heap. We were [mentally] going back to that cave where Savage discovers Maul.’ And in a way we were making a statement that while he composed himself, the madness was always there. The despair, the suffering, none of it has been healed, in any way. Mother Talzin doing all that she did and Maul putting together a shadow collective and conquering Mandalore... All the things he did, he never really left that cave where Savage found him.”
