The death of Princess Leia actress Carrie Fisher late last year was felt around the world, as many mourned the loss of an icon and idol. There was also the question of what this means for the future of Leia in storytelling. Fisher did shoot scenes for Rian Johnson's Star Wars Episode VIII, hitting theaters this December, so fans will get to see one last performance by Fisher as Leia. It would appear that it was also the plan for Fisher to return in 2019's Star Wars Episode IX, which is no longer possible. This raises the question of what Lucasfilm does with the character following Fisher's passing.
A new report from The Hollywood Reporter suggests that they will be tackling that question sooner rather than later. THR reports that Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow will be flying to San Fransisco next week to meet with Lucasfilm top staff to discuss the issue. Trevorrow is currently writing the script for Episode IX with his long time collaborator Derek Connolly.
What Star Wars will do to address the issue, is anyone's guess at this point. Given that the script for Episode IX is still being worked on, Leia could be written out of the story. Conversely, there is still a year until Episode VIII is released so something could be reshot for that film that deals with the situation. Another possibility is that Lucasfilm and ILM use the techniques they used in Rogue One to bring back Grand Moff Tarkin and A New Hope-era Leia to create a digital Leia for Episode IX. All are possible, but we likely won't know what Lucasfilm decides to do until well after Episode VIII is released at the absolute earliest.
