Lucasfilm: No Plans To Digitally Recreate Carrie Fisher As Leia

Since the the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher late last year there has been a great deal of speculation regarding the future of her character, Leia Organa. Fisher portrayed Leia in a substantial role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and she will also play a part in Star Wars: Episode VIII, which completed filming last year. It is unclear how the filmmakers will deal with her absence in Star Wars: Episode IX and beyond, but we just got confirmation of something that definitely won't be happening.

Recently rumors have been making the rounds that suggested Disney was negotiating with Carrie Fisher's estate to allow for her likeness to be recreated using CGI in future films. The groundbreaking digital resurrection of Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story led many to believe a similar process may be used for Leia. Those rumors were reportedly denied by Disney, but even that wasn't enough quell the discussion.

Moments ago, Lucasfilm released a statement on StarWars.com in response to these rumors. The statement is brief and to the point; a CGI recreation of Carrie Fisher is off the table:

"We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa."
"Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars."

As mentioned in the statement, shooting down rumors is not something Lucasfilm usually does in an official capacity. In this case, I'm very glad they chose to address this rumor and put it to rest. Regardless of how the filmmakers choose to continue Leia's story, I'm sure they will find the best way to honor Carrie's legacy.
