Some of the most exciting aspects of the new trailers and other content released for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has involved a massive space battle involving X-Wings and TIE fighters. The film's director Gareth Edwards recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican (aka The Brez) and spoke about what it was like shooting those scenes and how the techniques they used differ slightly from previous films.
Edwards described the process, saying,
“When we were filming the X-wing footage in the film, we had the X-wing
[cockpit] mounted to a gimbal so it could move around, like it was
really flying. Then all around were the screens, in 180
degrees, that were projecting space and this pre-animated flight path as
the X-wing was moving around, like it was really flying.”
We actually caught a glimpse of this during the summer, back at Star Wars Celebration in the behind the scenes sizzle reel (around the 1:16 mark),
Edwards continued,
“I got inside this X-wing, put the camera on top of my shoulder and they
closed the cockpit. Then the thing just started flying and we started
going through space in a space battle. And I was filming it, trying to
film everything and trying to get the shots as well as I could.”
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16th.
