ROGUE ONE SPOILER ALERT!
One of the elements that makes Rogue One: A Star Wars Story so unique is that ever principle character dies. Given the weight of what they were doing and the stakes of their mission, it makes sense that the crew of Rogue One would have to make the ultimate sacrifice. You might think that this was something the filmmakers and the studio would fight over. That Disney would want at least some of the characters to survive to set up sequels and spin offs, or at least to make the ending less distressing for audiences.
Not so, says director Gareth Edwards. Edwards spoke with Empire Magazine's Spoiler podcast about the film's ending, revealing that the ultimate fate of the characters was never challenged by the studio executives. Though the podcast episode was published too early by Empire and has since been pulled until December 26th, iO9 heard the interview and published this quote from Edwards about whether or not the entire cast's fate was sealed from the beginning,
"The very first version, they didn’t. In the screenplay. And it was just assumed by us that we couldn’t do that. ‘They’re not going to let us do that.’ So I was trying to figure out how this ends where that doesn’t happen. And then everyone read that and there was this feeling of like, ‘They’ve got to die, right?’ And everyone was like, ‘Yeah, can we?’
We thought we weren’t going to be allowed to but Kathy [Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm] and everyone at Disney were like ‘Yeah it makes sense/ I guess they have to because they’re not in A New Hope.’ And so from that point on we had the license.
I kept waiting for someone to go, ‘You know what? Could we just film an extra scene where we see Jyn and Cassian, they’re okay and they’re on another planet?’ And it never came. No one ever gave us that note, so we got to do it."

The ending sequences of Rogue One are some of the most powerful moments, not only in the film but, in Star Wars in general. The sacrifices the characters make really show the stakes of the war between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire. Suffice to say Edwards and the teams at Lucasfilm and Disney made the right choice with the film's ending.
