The Hollywood Reporter is at it again! Their newest report claims that filming for Star Wars Episode VII is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi for several weeks in May:
"Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Star Wars: Episode VII will shoot in and around the city-state, which is part of the United Arab Emirates, beginning mid-May. Sources also say it would be a four-week shoot."
HR speculates that that film crews will be taking advantage of the area's desert climate to portray Tatooine. As you can see from the photo above, Abu Dhabi itself is a sprawling city and doesn't resemble Tatooine at all. It could also be that the exotic, modern architecture of Abu Dhabi will be featured as the cityscape for a yet unseen planet in the Galaxy far, far away. "In and around" the city could mean anything. Also, they previously reported that filming for scenes on Tatooine would be taking place in Morocco. They mention the fact that due to political unrest in Tunisia, where a majority of the Tatooine scenes in previous films were shot, makes it far too dangerous for J.J Abrams & crew to travel there for filming. If what HR says is true, it could mean that a return to Tatooine in Episode VII is requiring more than one country to replace Tunisa.
As always, it's not official until we hear it from Lucasfilm. Take this with a grain of salt.
