'Rogue One' Producer Shares New Details About the Empire's Operation on Scarif

 By Ciaran Duggan,

Entertainment Weekly explain the significance behind the wheel-shaped space station based on Scarif, a new planet from the upcoming film Rogue One.

Scarif is set to be an important cog in the imperial military machine. The entire tropical planet is covered by a force field which protects the weapons development facility located on the planet.

Rogue One co-producer John Swartz spoke about the reason behind the creation of 'Scarif':

"You can see the blue sheen surrounding the planet. The shield gate is the security. As Imperial ships and cargo comes through, it punches a hole in the shield so they can pass.

Scarif is part of their military industrial complex. It's not necessarily where the Death Star was constructed, but a lot of military research goes on there.

That's why Krennic spends time there. It's the site of research, structural engineering, munitions and manufacturing, all rolled into one facility."

Fans have been lucky to see just a couple of shots from the space station in the trailers, including the latest TV spot released today, and whilst the design may appear to be very similar to the dome shaped Trade-Federation ships, the inspiration came from Los Alamos, New Mexico. This was where the first nuclear bomb was tested during the Second World War.

Will we see a similar plot unfold on Scarif? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
