Ewan McGregor Shares Why He Almost Turned Down 'Star Wars'

Ewan McGregor has become synonymous with Star Wars after his turn as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Prequel Trilogy from 1999-2005, but apparently it almost didn't happen.  Speaking with Telegraph (via Female First) McGregor revealed he almost didn't take the role as Obi-Wan, considering it to be too mainstream for him.  Ultimately, his childhood love for Star Wars and respect for George Lucas convinced him to take the part.

He told The Telegraph,
"Star Wars is Star Wars, it's something I grew up with as a kid. At first, I was very reluctant to do it, because I saw myself as this urban, grungy actor doing films about heroin and stuff, and that's who I felt like I really was. But the nearer I got to it, the more I wanted to do it: and it wasn't for money reasons, because it was back in the day I got paid nicely for it, but it wasn't ridiculous by any means. It was to do with being in it and it didn't feel like Hollywood. George Lucas hated Hollywood he was in San Francisco following the beat of his own drum."

While McGregor has had mixed feelings about his time on Star Wars over the year, more recently he has settled into a place where he seems at peace with his time on Star Wars and is happy to talk about itHe's even willing to return to it, having made a brief audio cameo in The Force Awakens and being excited by the prospect of an Obi-Wan A Star Wars Story film (or two).
