Arguably one of the most anticipated characters in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is Chirrut Îmwe. The blind warrior who's strong belief in the Force allows him to kick some series Stormtrooper butt has wowed audiences over and over in the trailers for Rogue One. Even before we saw footage of Chirrut, fans have been ecstatic about the inclusion of Donnie Yen, who plays Îmwe in the film.
Yen is a martial arts superstar and will be putting his unique talents to good use in Rogue One. In a recent interview with Jetset Magazine, Donnie Yen spoke about his career, what it took to get him in Rogue One, and his influence on the film. First off, Yen explains that he initially turned down the role, but ultimately was encouraged take the job by his three children:
“Truthfully, I didn’t want to spend five months apart from my family, filming in London... I asked them ‘how do you feel about daddy doing Star Wars?’ and they flipped out.”
Yen furthermore explains that because he is not only an actor, but a director, choreographer and owner of his own production company, alongside his wife, director Gareth Edwards allowed him to provide some input on the film and his character:
“It was my idea to make him blind.”
