Rumor: Alden Ehrenreich Signed For At Least Three 'Han' Movies

By Ciaran Duggan,

Today NY Daily News has reported that Alden Ehrenreich will star in at least three Star Wars films, in which he will play young Han Solo. According to NY Daily News, Disney have been privately laying out plans for the creation of more than just one Han Solo movie. The media outlet spoke to one of it's movie insiders about the Han Solo film:

"There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo move and its potential. Given that Han's early adventure do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new characters. They feel that his character has the right potential to become a central figure in several movies. They're keeping things under wrap the moment, but the deal is that he has signed for at least three movies."

Before I give my thoughts on the quote of NY Daily News' source, it is vital to stress that their article remains a rumor due to the fact their source has yet to be corroborated by any other outlets or reporters. Notwithstanding this caveat, I have chosen to highlight two compelling insights that this source gives us. Firstly, the notion of 'potential' is intriguing and this is the first time we have heard this word used in relation to these so-called 'Star Wars Stand Alone Stories'. Rogue One is viewed as a stand-alone film and of course there can be no real follow up to that particular movie because it is supposed to lead right into A New Hope. According to NY's insider this will not be the same for the Han Solo movie,

Secondly, the idea that there will be at least 'three' movies in which Han will be a central character is exciting, but also concerning. Of course, Han is one of the most popular characters of the Star Wars Saga and it will be thrilling to see a film concentrated solely on his character. However, I hope that Han's popularity won't lead to the 'milking' of a fan favorite, which some more cynical minded people would say that Disney intends to use the Han films as a 'cash cow'. Disney and Lucasfilm need to be realistic and ask themselves two questions:

1) Is there enough compelling content which could be used in a trilogy of Han films?
2) Will fans be missing out on other character-centric films, such as Obi Wan, Yoda or Ahsoka?

In spite of these caveats I am sure that Disney and Lucasfilm will do a stellar job with this project. We have to be patient, but we also have to see how Rogue One performs because that film will set the precedent for future Star Wars 'Stand Alone' stories to come. Yes in one sense each stand alone film will be unique in its own way, but on the other hand these unique elements can also be looked on as connecting tissue. In essence, we know that each stand alone film will possess a different score, different characters, different visual effects and a different tone. Will these different factors contribute to the success or failure of these films? We won't get a conclusive answer after Rogue One and Han Solo, but we'll certainly get a very good idea.
