Rumor: Kyber Crystals in 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'

The term "Kyber Crystal" has a long history with Star Wars.  The Kyber Crystal was the focus of the 1978 novel Star Wars: Splinter of the Minds Eye, which was originally intended to be the sequel to Star Wars when George Lucas wasn't sure if he would be able to make a sequel.  In the current canon, Kyber Cyrstals are used to power lightsabers (as seen on The Clone Wars animated series). The unproduced The Clone Wars episode arc, "Crystal Crisis on Utapau", implied that Palpatine used massive Kyber Crystals to power the Death Star's super laser.  The Star Wars Rebels episode "Breaking Ranks" also implied this.  With the Death Star connection, it should come as no surprise that our friends at MakingStarWars.net are reporting that we'll be seeing Kyber Crystals in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, as well as what we can expect to see from them in the film.  As usual, there is a chance this may not be true but, if you are trying to avoid Rogue One spoilers then stop reading now.  This is your SPOILER ALERT!

According to MSW,
The crystals are being (mined?) taken from a mountain where the crystals are placed into crates. There is a communication platform there on the side of the mountain where Imperial Scientists reside. Death Squad’s Death Troopers are also at the location for the sequence. On set there were a lot of crates. We may have seen these crates in drone photos but we aren’t certain yet.
Giant Kyber Crytal concept art from unproduced The Clone Wars episodes.
It was stated in the Rebels Recon for "Out of Darkness" that eight Kyber Crystals are needed to power the Death Star's laser.  With Rogue One taking place so soon before A New Hope it seems unlikely that they need more Crystals for the first Death Star.  However, it seems plausible that the Empire has already begun work on the second Death Star.

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
