We're a little more than a week removed from the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens
on Blu-ray in North America (and a little less than a week away from
the release of the blu-ray in the UK) and fans are still talking about
the deleted scenes. Seven deleted scenes were released when the film
hit home media for the first time this month, but director JJ Abrams
thinks that more are on the way. Collider caught up with Abrams at
Cinema Con where the director was walking the red carpet with actor
Simon Pegg, who played Unkar Plutt in The Force Awakens. Here's what Abrams (and Pegg) had to say about the deleted scenes,
J.J.
ABRAMS: I think there are going to be some more that are going to be
available online, but I don’t know when that’s going to happen. But
there are some others.
SIMON PEGG: Most of them feature me, funnily enough. There’s a whole story featuring Unkar. Like him opening his shop—
ABRAMS: There is, actually.
COLLIDER:
Did Disney say “We’re going to have an ultimate box set and we want to
save five minutes for that box set after Episode 9?”
ABRAMS:
No, Disney’s been amazing. There’s been no nefarious or weird, “Let’s
hold things back for the fans,” but there will be other deleted scenes
that will be available for those who wish to see them.
Pegg
may be joking about there being scenes about Unkar's backstory, but we
do know a subplot involving Unkar tracking Rey to Maz's castle was cut
from the film (see the behind the scenes picture below). As for other
scenes, there are reports of a scene involving Maisie Richardson-Sellers
character Kor Sella (scene briefly on Hosnian Prime in the moments
before its destruction) talking to Leia, which would have explained some
of the political situation of the galaxy.
Abrams suggests that we might see more scenes released online, while others have speculated that some material is being saved for the 3D blu-ray release which is coming later this year.
