Luke Skywalker's role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was one of the film's biggest secrets, partially because he was barely in the movie. This presented director JJ Abrams with a dilemma when it came to the film's now famous table read. Abrams wound up asking Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill to narrate the table read, reading all the non-dialogue portions of the script. With The Force Awakens hitting blu-ray tomorrow, Abrams spoke with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican about that decision.
Abrams told Breznican, "It was a way of having [him] be part of every scene, every moment, not just spiritually or thematically or narratively, but actually. Having his voice in it made the read through a better experience for everyone."
Abrams also admitted that decision was a bit of misdirection to hide the fact that Luke was barely in the movie. He told EW, "It was partly trickery. We knew, obviously,
that he didn’t speak in the film. And because we knew we were going to
take pictures, and people knew he was in the movie, we needed to have him there."
