JJ Abrams Reveals A Clue About the Identity of Rey's Parents (UPDATED!)

UPDATEEntertainment Weekly caught up with Abrams, where he clarified his comments.  Abrams told EW, "What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world".  So she could still be Luke's daughter...

ORIGINAL STORY:
One of the big questions about the sequel trilogy is the identity of Rey's parents.  It's the big question fans were left wondering after seeing The Force Awakens, and it's one that likely won't be answered until Episode IX.  One of the few people who knows the answer is The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams, and he dropped a hint about their identities during an interview at the Tribeca film festival.  Abrams was being interviewed on stage by comedian Chris Rock when a young fan asked the question, "Who are Rey's parents?"  Check out the video of Abrams answering below,

Abrams answer of "Rey's parents are not in Episode VII", seems to shoot down many of the theories about her lineage.  A popular theory among fans was that she is Luke Skywalker's daughter and this answer from Abrams seems to put an end to that theory.  The question remains, however, who are they and have we met them before?

So it rules out her being a Skywalker by any of the ones we know. Ie the twins Luke and Leia.

Abrams also said that Cumberbatch wasn't playing Kahn in Star Trek: Into Darkness.

you could argue Luke wasn't really in Episode VII being 30 seconds at the end :) but we will find out eventually

he is known to lie so this means very little

yeah, that pretty much rules out Rey Skywalker...unless as was mentioned you consider luke to "Not be in" episode 7. But combining this with what daisy said about Rey's parents not being super important to informing who the character is solidifies it for me. If she was a Skywalker that would be a HUGE part of who she is whether she knew it or not. Plus mark Hamill has joked about it a few to many times...

I don't know how any of his statements here were funny enough to laugh at. "Ahhhhs" and gasps are more realistic reactions to such hints, unless the conversation preceding this video clip already had a light tone to it.

YODA CONFIRMED

Maybe still a Kenobi. Have to say though I'm kind of upset that she's not Lukes daughter.

A Kenobi, a Palpatine, or an unknown???? Hmmmmm we have to wait 3 years to find out.

Or just maybe, a Jinn, Qui-Gon has been known to be a rulebreaker of the jedi code and he seemed to get pretty close with Schmi during TPM. ;)

Maybe a Organa/Solo...and thats why she was sent away. Wont be the first time siblings knew nothing of eachother and by that technically is a skywalker..... just a theory

He said her parents aren't in 7. Not her parent.

Han and Leia were both in episode 7. The entire point of this article, in fact the only point this article makes, is that Rey's parents were not in episode 7. My theory is that your theory is wrong

Unknown said...

I would hazard a guess that he was actually speaking sarcastically and that they are in 7

Lando got busy on bespin. Well what have we here?

People saying Qui-Gon???....what??..did he force ghost I am madly in love with Jar Jar Binks... dont tell anyone but I have an engagement ring in my dresser someone ????...that would put Rey around her 70's!!!

George Lucas asked JJ what happened to Vaders grandchildren. That means plural, more than one. Rey is in fact a skywalker or a solo. JJ did not correct him about being plural. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=viDu9SLvF_E

The update of the article really makes it sound like Rey is a Skywalker...
But if she hadn't met them, my original theory, that I eventually ditched, could still be true. "My original theory?" You ask. Well: Poe and Rey are brother and sister. Yeah I know this is far fetched, but that's why I ditched the theory. But think about about it. This would mean that Rey would have a force connection through that mysterious force tree, which could link her to Luke since he has the other force tree. If Rey's parents were the damerons then I could definitely see a force connection and that reveal would be almost as crazy as "I am your father."
...
Anyways, I don't really fully believe that theory I created, but since everyone else was throwing them in the comments I thought I would too. That being said, I believe Rey is Luke's daughter.

Unknown said...

Itd be cool if she was Wedge Antilles daughter.

Shaggy Rat said...

My theory hasn't been mentioned as far as I've seen, so I will throw down my 2 cents...
I believe Rey is actually a force sensitive clone of Anakin Skywalkers mother. So technically, she is a Skywalker! Finn on the other hand, that is Luke's son.
Oh, and to those who think that Luke was only in the movie for a minute... Who do you think BB-8 is? I believe BB-8 is Luke's personal drone roaming the galaxy, completely under control of Luke via the force, so whenever you see bb-8 on screen, you are watching Luke.

Unknown said...

she's probably the Dooku little daughter (by the Dooku secret son)... yes,the joke is only funny in french with the portugese accent...Rey Dooku... sorry...

Unknown said...

Do you think the force gene is recessive or dominant?

Morlock said...

If she is Luke's daughter I'm going to be sorely disappointed in the lack of imagination.

Unknown said...

If she is not Luke's daughter I'll be very disappointed that the Skywalker legacy ends with Luke.
