One of the big questions many people left the movie theater wondering after seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens was "who are Rey's parents?" Many have speculated who Rey could be related to, with many thinking she's Luke Skywalker's daughter while others think she may be a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi. One person who knows for sure is the film's director JJ Abrams, but he's not telling. Abrams spoke at the recent Television Critics Association press tour, where he was asked about Rey's parentage. According to Entertainment Weekly, Abrams replied, "I know quite a bit" and left it at that.
This should come as no real surprise to anyone. Clearly this is something Abrams came up with or worked out with Episode VIII director Rian Johnson (so they could drop hints in The Force Awakens?) He didn't just leave the mystery for Johnson to figure out the answer to on his own. Another person who knows the answer is Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow, who recently stated that the mystery has a "satisfying" conclusion. Clearly all the directors of the sequel trilogy are excited about it.
Abrams also spoke about passing the reigns of the sequel trilogy on to Johnson, saying,
"My enthusiasm for Episode VIII is enormous. I’m very
much excited for and very jealous of anyone, especially Rian, who gets
to work so closely with this extraordinary cast and crew, truly an
amazing group. In that regard for sure, but I’m also relieved to have
gotten a chance to do a Star Wars movie."
