We heard recently that production on Star Wars Episode VIII had been delayed by a month to facilitate a rewrite by writer and director Rian Johnson. Now, Lucasfilm has announced that Episode VIII's release date has been moved to December 15th, 2017. StarWars.com also confirmed that production would begin next month in London.
Even though it makes the wait longer, I think Disney/Lucasfilm made the right decision here. Seeing the success The Force Awakens had in December, this move makes sense. Star Wars not only dominated the box office for several weeks, it also dominated the cultural conversation. With not many other big films to offer competition in late December/early January, it's not unreasonable to expect Star Wars will do the same in 2016 with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and then again in 2017 with Episode VIII. In addition, I think we all can agree that we're willing to wait if it gives the filmmakers more time to make a better film.
Star Wars Episode VIII is written and directed by Rian Johnson, and stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, and Adam Driver. It hits theatres December 15th, 2017.
