JJ Abrams Confirms Cameos From Ewan McGregor and Frank Oz in 'The Force Awakens'

By: Dominic Jones

Warning: This Story Contains Spoilers from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  If you haven't seen the film yet, stop reading now!

We heard reports this weekend that Ewan McGregor had reprised his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it turns out Obi-Wan wasn't the only classic Jedi with lines in the film.  JJ Abrams revealed to Entertainment Weekly that, not only did McGregor reprise his role, but Frank Oz also came back to record new Yoda dialogue!  Both can be heard when Rey experiences a Force vision after picking up Luke's old lightsaber in Maz Kanata's basement.

First Abrams confirmed what we heard in the sequence, telling EW,
"You do hear a little bit of Yoda. You hear Luke yelling out, ‘Nooo!’ from that moment in Empire. And you hear Obi-Wan at the end say, 'Rey … these are your first steps'"

About working with McGregor, Abrams said,
“Here’s the cool part. We asked Ewan McGregor to come in and do the line. And he was awesome and we were very grateful. He was incredibly sweet and handsome, and all that stuff. Then he rode off on his motorcycle. Literally the coolest voice over actor ever.”

About working with Oz, Abrams told EW,
“He was incredibly generous and came in to Bad Robot, where we had a recording area, and he was doing Yoda, saying a number of lines we gave to him.  This whole experience has been one outrageous moment after another. Just watching Frank Oz, you look at him and talk to him and his voice is very deep. I don’t know why I would have thought he sounded like Miss Piggy!  He was very generous to say, ‘Whatever makes the movie better, I’m happy to help out.”

Abrams also revealed that through some audio editing, they were also able to get Sir Alec Guiness' voice saying "Rey" during that sequence.  Abrams described his reaction when producer Bryan Burk first brought the audio to him, saying,
“I said, ‘That’s cool, is that the thing from Ewan McGregor?’  He said ‘No, we took a line from Alec Guinness saying ‘Afraid.’

They cut it, and you hear the performance – he’s saying it the way I would have begged Alec Guinness to have said it. It is so crazy perfect.  So when you hear Obi-Wan talk to Rey it is both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor doing the voice."

Abrams also explained why all these voices can be heard in the sequence, saying,
"The idea of the voices was, we wanted the audience to feel – but not necessarily be presented right in your face — this idea that familiar, Force-strong voices were connecting with her. At least as well as they could."

The more I learn about this sequence, the cooler it gets.  I love that they were able to bring back Oz and McGregor to do new dialogue and the fact that they were able to make it so Alec Guinness says "Rey" in the sequence is fantastic.  It does a really nice job of tying Rey' story in with what came before.

  1. My theory is that Rey could be related to Obi Wan not the Skywalkers. It doesn't make sense timeline wise or character wise why any of the Skywalker family would abandon her on a crappy planet with scavengers. But we don't know much about Obi Wan's family and honestly it would be kind of bs if only the Skywalkers effect galactic events.

    1. He had an affair with a Mandolorian queen prior to the Clone Wars. It's possible Rey is his granddaughter.

  2. Do you think they will most like come back as Force - ghosts in the eighth episode? I hope so! And (sad to say it) but I kind of do hope they have Anakin or Vader pop up as one as well... it would be a character I would like to hear from again.

  3. Rey is Han & Leia's daughter. There is no arguing this. Wait.

  4. the hand of the man who carries rey when clid is from a black man...Lando??

...there is another possibility, Rey could have born with midiclorians and she is not daughter or sister of any character known.

    1. I've seen the movie three times now, and it seems like to me that the person talking to her is the same guy who she sells parts too.

    2. I'm positive about the hand being of the "buyer" guy.

  5. Rey can't be Obi-wan's daughter based on the timeline. She's not old enough and Obi-wan died in IV. Plus, Anikin's lightsaber "called" to her which means to me there's a blood connection. It's either Luke or Leia's daughter in my humble opinion. I'm actually leaning towards Luke personally. Leia would "know" that Rey was her daughter and with her desire to be with her child Ben, I think she would have said something to Rey..

  6. I don't know. I need to use this space just to vent.
How is it possible someone without any relation with the Force such as Finn being able to use a light saber as he did, fight with an experienced Kylo Ren and not die with kylo's first stroke? If Rey never heard about the Force before, how is it possible using such an advanced skill as Force controlling that storm trooper? I don't know... This movie was great, but all these lose ends will need to be really tight in the future movies. I hope Disney don't screw up as it did with Darth Vader dancing as a Buffon in a video I saw. A little bit more of respect. Thank you for this space. May the Force be with you!

    1. If you consider Skywalker ability in episode I, it's not too far a stretch to believe rey's powers in VII. She had heard stories. So she was not completely unaware of the force. Also, she had direct interaction with kylo. So, in theory, the learning curve is shortened.

    2. Rey and Finn were both in training with Skywalker at a young age. Whatever catostrophic event happened to make Luke hide is where the seperation of him and his padawans began - The dark side has power to erase memories. Snoke is an extremely powerful Sith.

Neither Finn or Rey had any idea who their family was and spoke in ways about their childhood as if they have no or little recollection.

Luke may have thought Rey was killed which is why he fell into depression and went into seclusion. It would take Rey to bring him back.

Snoke may beva Force Wielder from the realm of Morti, son of Mortis, wielder of the dark side --- when adked by Anakin if he is a Sith, the son of Mortis replied, "Yes and no." Mortis is a realm where the daughter of Mortis (light side), son of Mortis (dark side) and the father of Mortis (the balancer of light and dark side) live. Supposedly they killed each other off. I'm not buying it - I think Snoke is the son of Mortis.

    3. The stormtroopers had training with vibroswords as shown in the film. Rey used the sword to stab pretty much like the staff she uses regularly

    4. Agreed with Kubos.
No need for super freeking plot. He is just a trained storm trooper.
And kylo is weak so far. He's not been fully trained or dragged to the dark side.

    5. Rey is a Skywalker and Finn is the grandson of Mace Windu. It's in there blood. Just a hunch.

  8. I have heard a theory that rey is lukes daughter and was training at the jedi temple but when kylo ren turned to the dark side and attacked it luke had left her on a scavanger planet to hide her away from kylo ren seeing as he was killing all the jedi

  9. why would Han and Leia call there kid Ben? They didn't know him. All they saw was what we see in A New Hope. It's too personal. If you read the books or follow the timeline "Ben" is Mara and Luke's son.

    1. I agree but Disney has decannonized almost all of the books so they could have free reign to make the story as they like.

    3. Han and Leia didn't know Obi Wan? What crack are you smoking??? Have you not seen A New Hope?

"Help us Obi Wan, you are only hope."

Obi Wan hired Han Solo at the Mos Eisley Cantina to fly Luke, C3PO, R2D2 and him off of Tatooine.

  10. jedi might not have children if real jedi. If Luke is rey's father then he broke the rules....attempting to the books of the saga, Mara jade and luke gets married....I am praying for not to happen. I prefer no more father/sons rellationships in starwars...story reppeating! two death stars? to pair of twins? again father vs son??

  11. If you read the books or follow the timeline you wasted your time...Mara no longer exists.
And complaining that they named their son Ben? Really? Yeah that's totally unbelievable. Maybe Dave would've been better. LOL

  16. There are numerous clues pointing to Rey's connection to the Skywalker bloodline. She is almost impossibly and unexplainably gifted in engineering and piloting. She can also understand BB-8, perhaps a skill learned from a childhood spent around R2-D2 and Luke. Those talents would be a direct connection to Anakin and his skills. Luke turned out to be a great pilot as well, as evidenced by his first flight on an X-Wing and the Death Star battle.

Maz suggests to Rey the family she has been looking for is ahead of her. Kylo reads her mind and mentions he sees an island, unknowingly at the time, it was the island which Luke ends up being on. Also, Kylo says "I feel it too" when he's trying to take info from her mind. I believe they realized their relationship as cousins at that moment. This would satisfy Maz's prediction as Rey has now been acquainted with her family as the movie comes to its end.

Perhaps Luke did have a wife. Or maybe just a love affair. He is, after all, Anakin's son. I like to believe Rey's power comes from her father and whoever her mother turns out to be. If true, the series could progress as Rey helps usher in the next Jedi order as Kylo begins assembling the new Sith. Each have their respective mentors in Luke and Snoke, who could lay the foundations for overseeing their training.

Now that the Death Star 3 has been destroyed, I hope we're done seeing the ultimate planet killing machines. I want to see more Jedi/Sith action and less forced urgency in the form of giant death machine. Nevertheless, I'm excited for the direction of this series! I can't wait to watch it unfold.

Also, a connection between Finn and Lando could be fun. It could explain his tenacity, but also the Lando moment he has when he is being selfish and wants to save his own ass. He has a change of heart when he realizes his friend is in danger, as Lando did when the empire "altered the deal". Obviously Lando's transgression was far worse. Finn could be force sensitive to some degree, as you see his saber usage. Maybe he'll be a descendant from the Windu family, or just a whole new character bloodline. Fun to think about either way!

Please make it happen while McGregor is still young enough to play him.

  18. Rey related to Obi-Wan? I kind of hope not. I do like the idea of Yoda and/or Obi-Wan having something to do with her past, or at least show up like a force ghost and sit with her at Luke's campfire and discuss all of it over marshmelons.
