Harrison Ford Talks Han Solo With Entertainment Weekly

The first of Entertainment Weekly's new Star Wars features, being released to coincide with their special double issue coming out this Friday -featuring four Star Wars covers-, was their interview with Harrison Ford.  EW chats with Ford about returning to the role of Han Solo for The Force Awakens as well as Ford's thoughts on the upcoming Han Solo Anthology film.  We've pulled some highlights from the interview below,

On Ford's reaction to his injury on set, he said,
“I knew that my leg was likely broken, and I didn’t know what other injuries there were.  I was mostly concerned about the long ambulance ride to London.  I asked them to bring my cell phone over.”

On Han Solo in the Original Trilogy, Ford said,
“He was always the cynical member of the original characters. While we were invited to engage on the questions of some pretty arcane mysteries — the Force and the mythology that surrounds it — he was the guy who said, ‘What? Huh? Come on.’  There was a callow youth, a beautiful princess, a wise old warrior, and there was a smart-ass.”

On if Han will retain some of his smart ass nature, Ford said,
“There’s not an abandoning of the character.  He does not aspire to the position of Obi-‘Ben’ Kenobi, nor do I aspire to be some New Age Alec Guinness. His development is consistent with the character, and there are emotional elements which have occasioned his growth.”

On how much (or how little) Han has changed, Ford said,
“We spend a lot more time [in the movie] on his failure to master basic skills, like accounting. And accounting for his own behavior. There’s a lot of the rogue still left in Solo. Some things don’t change.”

On the response he received at this summer's San Diego Comic Con, Ford said,
“Well, it was touching. I don’t know how one could not be moved by that.”

On the topic of the 2018 Young Han Solo Anthology film, Ford was asked if he's been approached about it.  He replied,
“I think they’re probably talking to the young Han Solo.”

As for advice for whoever takes on the role, Ford said,
I would say, ‘Talk to your director. Watch the movies. And welcome aboard. Make it your own.’”

You can read the rest of the interview with Ford over at EW!  And stay tuned for more Star Wars: The Force Awakens news coming from EW later today.
