While we excitedly await the release of new Star Wars films, games, television series and much more, it's easy to forget that all of it came at a price. Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm back in 2012 saw the postponement and cancellation of several Star Wars productions that were underway at the time. One of those projects was The Force Unleashed III which was presumably in it's early stages of production when acquisition occurred and the subsequent downsizing of LucasArts. Cinelinx recently spoke with Haden Blackman, who was creative director at LucasArts up until 2010 and was heavily involved with the production of the first two installments of The Force Unleashed series. When asked about the third game, Blackman dropped some hints about what may have been treated to had the production continued. He reveals that he had some grand plans for the franchise going forward:
"My long-term plan was to turn the franchise into more of an open world experience, and eventually introduce co-op play — I wanted to make games about two Force wielders adventuring through the Star Wars universe together. I tried to keep that alive for an early treatment of TFU3."
Furthermore, Blackman was pressed for details about what the actual story would entail. He only had this to say:
"I think the details are best lost to time now, but my hope was that we’d have Vader and Starkiller reluctantly working together to stop one of the Emperor’s plots that threatens to replace Vader... I jotted down a few notes somewhere about the possible story, but that was it."
The Force Unleashed was, and still is, extremely popular and it's a shame the third game may never come to fruition, especially considering the huge cliffhanger at the end of the second game which (Spoiler alert!) left Darth Vader a captive of the Rebels. While The Force Unleashed's story of how the Rebellion came to be is basically being replaced by Star Wars Rebels, there's always hope that the game could brought back under the "Legends" banner, or simply re-imagined to fit within canon. I know many fans would love to see Starkiller, Kota and the rest of the gang make another appearance sometime in the future.
