Behind the Scenes Details on Chewbacca's Costume in 'The Force Awakens'

Allure has released the latest instalment in Jenna Rosenstein's look at the behind the scenes makeup and hair stylist who worked on Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.  The latest features behind the scenes details on the hair styling that went into keeping Chewie looking like Chewie.  According to Allure, there were four and a half Chewbacca suits made for The Force Awakens (the half suit was used by Peter Mayhew during close-ups).

As for what went into Chewie's hairstyling (or is that fur styling?), Rosenstein spoke with Maria Cork, the supervisor of the hair department in creature effects, here's what she revealed (via: Allure)

He prefers a curling wand. “We used Fantasia Instant Oil Moisturizer on tangles at night,” says Cork. "Then we’d touch it up with GHD heat protectant and a tapered Wahl styling wand to give the fur a natural-looking curl.

He uses two kinds of hair spray. "On his head, we’d use Fudge Cement spray to keep the hair neat, and on his body, a little bit of Schwarzkopf Silhouette Super Hold hair spray to control it while still having the hair flow around.”

He doesn't shampoo every day, either. To clean the suits in between deep washes, Cork and her team used a combination of tea-tree oil and vodka; it sanitizes without extra drying time. They washed the suits about two or three times during filming ("it's a day job to wash it and another day to restyle it," says Cork). During the wash, they used Aussie Miracle Conditioner to give the hair "a really good condition."

I have to see these Allure articles have been pretty interesting.  It's not an aspect of Star Wars I've seen too much focus on before.  We've heard lots about actors and costuming in the past, but rarely about the hair and makeup.  It's nice to see the artists getting their due on this film.
