When Lucasfilm announced that they would hosting a panel in the legendary Hall H at San Diego Comic Con this year, many fans (myself included) assumed this meant we would be seeing a new trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens during the event. Not so, according to Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican, who reported today that no trailer or clips from the movie would be shown at the con. In fact, there won't even be a new trailer at D23 Expo (Disney's own convention) next month. (D23 is rumored to be where the plans for new Star Wars attractions at the Disney Parks will be unveiled). The next trailer, according to EW, is expected in the fall.
While this is bound to be disappointing for some, Breznican says we needn't worry as there are "other surprises" in store. This could include "several actors who haven’t yet spoken publicly about their roles venturing onstage in Hall H." My guess would be that Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, and maybe Lupita Nyong'o and Andy Serkis will be on hand to give us short descriptions of their characters like we got from John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Isaac at Celebration.
Also, I think it would be a safe bet that Harrison Ford will be making an appearance. We know that if it weren't for his plane crash he would have been on stage with JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy at Celebration Anaheim. Even if they're not showing any new footage Lucasfilm surely wants to make this a special event and having Ford their (along with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, perhaps) would do just that. Ford has only ever appeared at Comic Con once before, back in 2010 to promote Cowboys and Aliens and has never appeared at a Star Wars Celebration.
While I'm somewhat disappointed that there will be no new footage, I'm sure there is loads more that can be revealed without showing any footage. We could get more details about the story, characters, as well as behind the scenes stories and pictures or perhaps even some new concept art. Plus, who wouldn't love to see BB-8 role out on stage again? There's also the potential for news about other Star Wars films, the panel is called "Lucasfilm" and not "The Force Awakens," after all. The other thing is, I do kind of like the idea of Star Wars Celebration being the only convention where new footage was shown. It makes that whole experience even more special.
The "Lucasfilm" panel takes place on Friday July 10th at 5:30pm PST in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con. It will feature Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams, The Force Awakens co-writer Lawrence Kasdan, and "special guests." It will be moderated by the Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick (@Midnight, Talking Dead).
