Where The Force Awakens chose to shoot on film to better emulate the look of the Original Trilogy, the first Star Wars: Anthology film, Rogue One will be embracing the latest technologies of digital cinema. The Hollywood Reporter reported today that Rogue One would be among several upcoming Hollywood films to, at least partially, be shot using new 6K cameras.
According to THR,
Parts of Star Wars: Rogue One and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation were
shot with Arri's Alexa 65, a large format, 6K resolution model of
Arri's popular Alexa camera that is available exclusively through Arri
Rental.
Many cinematographers are in line to get their hands on one of the still limited number of the new cameras, which really dazzled when unwrapped last fall, using test footage lensed by cinematographer Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty), who’s using it on Rogue One (the production is also using film).
For those unfamiliar, 6K resolution is essentially a very, very high quality camera that has a resolution of approximately three times your typical 1080p videos.
I like the idea of using this new technology on Rogue One. George Lucas always used Star Wars to push the boundaries of cinema, including his use of digital cameras on Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. I understand the rationale behind shooting The Force Awakens on film, but it's nice to see Star Wars filmmakers continuing the franchise's legacy of advancing cinematic technology.
It will be interesting to see how (and how much) Greig Fraser and director Gareth Edwards put this new technology to use when Star Wars: Rogue One opens in theaters December 16th, 2016
