According to Jason at MSW,
On Episode 64 of Now, This is Podcasting! we discussed the armbands on Imperial Officers in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Most of them were rather esoteric in nature. While I was translating
the armband for an Imperial Major, I came across this one:
That translates to TARKIN. Major Tarkin.
Is Major Tarkin just an Easter Egg for a character that might not
even appear in frame during the film? Is he an emerging character? Was
this band created by one designer without much input from the powers
that be who can make such creative choices? Or does Grand Moff Tarkin’s
family continue to serve the evil Galactic Empire?
I don’t have all the answers to that yet. But I can tell you one thing, the armband was created for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and someone wore it in the film.
Could there be a Tarkin connection in The Force Awakens? There is no precedent for Tarkin having any descendants but with the EU now being "Legends" anything is possible. We know that Tarkin will be appearing on Star Wars Rebels very soon, so could that be an attempt to familiarize younger viewers who may not have seen the film yet with the character so when he's talked about in the new film they will have some understanding of who he is? I like the idea of there being some reference to Tarkin in The Force Awakens even if this does just turn out to be an Easter Egg.
As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
