The legendary Jedi Master is returning to the small screen. TV Guide broke the story today that Jedi Master Yoda would be appearing on the animated series Star Wars Rebels in the episode "Path of the Jedi," which airs on Monday January 5th at 8 pm. In addition, none other than Frank Oz (voiced Yoda in five Star Wars films, and manipulated the puppet of Yoda in three) is returning to voice Yoda.
The twist is that Yoda will only be "appearing" as disembodied voice. Executive producer Dave Filoni explained the decision saying, "I felt personally to keep Yoda as this disembodied thing it would confuse the audience less, I didn't want you to think Yoda could be teleporting from planet to planet."
I love the way they are doing this by not having Yoda physically appear on the show, only hear his voice. Perhaps Ezra will be mediating as part of his training and he'll connect with Yoda through the Force. Or maybe Kanan will have some audio flashbacks, similar to what Ezra had in "Empire Day", back to his time training with Yoda at the Jedi Temple. Or maybe something completely different. Regardless, it's cool to see they got Frank Oz back to do the voice. Oz follows in the footsteps of James Earl Jones and Anthony Daniels, both of whom have made appearances on the series as their characters from the films.
"Path of the Jedi" airs Monday January 5th, 2015 at 8pm on Disney XD and is available on the Watch Disney XD app as of December 29th.
